It may seem watery but is sure as hell beats tomato puree. And as far as I am aware, adding salt too early in the cooking process sweats the tomatoes, causing them to dry out and thus create a very watery sauce with huge chunks of dried out tomatoes. Taking a more chef-like standpoint, i usually add a teaspoon of sugar with the tomatoes just to counter the sourness given out.
