and water is fine, but what would make that sauce abit tasty is tommatoe paste and salt and pepper no butter, only if your going to add it in the begining in substitute for the oil! =)there is nothing wrong with caned tommatoes!

It may seem watery but is sure as hell beats tomato puree. And as far as I am aware, adding salt too early in the cooking process sweats the tomatoes, causing them to dry out and thus create a very watery sauce with huge chunks of dried out tomatoes.
